The Goodest Boy
We begin again
…this time with our dog, Benji, by our side. We aren’t so lucky as to get an altar in the first room, and we face many of the same issues as before: locked chests, lots of shops with nabbable loot, and no way to reliably kill enemies from a distance. We actually encounter three shops as we explore down to level 6; a wand shop, a delicatessen, and a general store. Along the way we pick up a lockpick (and go back to unlock all the chests we’ve found), a blindfold (death to Floating Eyes), and a ring of invisibility.
Confident in my current kit, I enter the Gnomish Mines with Benji and begin making our way down. We get some other useful loot; a dwarvish iron helm, iron shoes, and a pickaxe. On our way back out of the Mines, taking a brief respite from the stabby gnomes, Benji kept trying to give me something: a warhammer dropped by a dwarf. I ignore it at first, but Benji is very insistent to the point of bringing it with him out of the mines. I finally read the chat to find…
which I’ll almost certainly never use!
We end the night on a win by making my way to Minetown, where we find ourselves the first altar of the game and a Ring of Levitation.
